Peek into the Mathematics Concepts of Kindergarten Curriculum
Kindergartners are developing a foundation that will equip them to learn for the rest of their academic lives and math skills are particularly important. Studies have found that a strong math foundation in kindergarten can affect lifelong math performance. Addition is the first math skill most students learn and mastering addition in kindergarten can be the first step toward a long-lasting appreciation of math.
Kindergarten Math Skills
Number writing and recognition, as well as memorization of a few basic addition problems, are also typically part of the kindergarten curriculum in Singapore. Children who master these basic concepts are well-prepared for primary school math syllabus.
Number Bonds
Number bonds show how numbers are split or combined. An essential strategy of Singapore mathematics. Number bonds reflect the ‘part-part-whole’ relationship of numbers as they move up to primary schools.
How do number bonds work?
Number bonds are represented by circles connected by lines. The ‘whole’ is written in the first circle, while the ‘parts’ are in the adjoining circles. 
Children are usually introduced to number bonds through the Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract (CPA) approach (Based on Singapore Mathematics Syllabus for Primary School).
Background to the CPA framework
Children can find mathematics difficult because it is abstract. The CPA approach builds on children’s existing knowledge by introducing abstract concepts in a concrete and tangible way. It involves moving from concrete materials, to pictorial representations, to abstract symbols and problems. The CPA framework is so established in Singapore mathematics teaching that the Ministry of Education requires teachers to use the approach in the lower primary teaching of mathematics.
